What is Cerro Catedral and why is it special?

Cerro Catedral is South America's largest ski resort, located 20km from downtown Bariloche. It sits at 1,030–2,100m elevation with a vertical drop of over 1,070m, around 120km of marked runs, and roughly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain. Its name comes from the iconic granite spires at the summit that resemble a gothic cathedral. The upper mountain fans out into wide-open bowls and chutes above the treeline, with excellent terrain for every level. Catedral also serves as the main access point to the Bariloche backcountry — including the ski-off into Refugio Frey.

What terrain does Cerro Catedral offer?

The upper mountain (above treeline) has wide-open groomers, bowls, chutes, and mogul runs with panoramic views of Lago Nahuel Huapi and the Andes. Mid-mountain through the tree zone offers excellent tree skiing and a mix of groomed and ungroomed terrain. For advanced and expert guests, Catedral has outstanding sidecountry and backcountry access — including La Laguna, the Nubes zone, and the ski-off into Frey. The Nubes chairlift delivers around 1,800 vertical feet of diverse terrain in a single lap, with some of the best views from any ski resort in South America.

What is Refugio Frey?

Refugio Frey is a legendary mountain hut at 1,700m, sitting on the shores of Laguna Toncek surrounded by dramatic granite towers and couloirs. Built and operated by the Club Andino Bariloche since 1931, it's widely considered the finest backcountry ski destination in Patagonia. The hut sleeps up to 40 people in shared dormitory-style rooms and provides meals, kitchen facilities, and a wood-burning fireplace. On this tour you spend 3 nights at Frey, giving you multiple days to explore the terrain — classic couloirs, steep chutes, open bowls, and spine lines with vertical descents of over 1,000m in good conditions.

How do we access Refugio Frey on this tour?

We access Refugio Frey by ski touring off the back of Cerro Catedral — taking the lifts to the top and touring across the backcountry, descending into Vantitter valley before the final climb to the hut. The approach takes 4–6 hours and covers around 10km with 700m+ of total vertical. You spend 3 nights at the hut, giving you 2 full days to ski the terrain around Frey before descending back to Bariloche. What skill level is required for the Refugio Frey segment?

The Frey segment requires advanced skiing ability and solid mountain fitness. The approach involves off-piste descents and a touring leg of 700m+ over 10km. Terrain around the hut includes steep couloirs in the 35–45° range. Guests who are not ready for this segment can remain at Catedral with guide support — we'll discuss individual objectives during the pre-trip planning process.

Do I need backcountry gear — beacon, shovel, probe?

Yes — this is a safety requirement, not optional. All guests accessing off-piste, sidecountry, and backcountry terrain must carry a beacon, shovel, and probe. For the Frey segment you also need a ski touring setup (AT bindings or splitboard). All equipment is available to rent in Bariloche with advance notice — let us know when you book and we'll coordinate.

Is travel insurance required?

Yes — travel and ski insurance is required for all guests and is not included in the price. Your policy must cover backcountry skiing, ski touring, and mountain rescue (helicopter evacuation). Please arrange this before your departure and bring proof of coverage. Contact us if you need guidance on suitable policies.

What meals are included?

All breakfasts and all dinners are included throughout the trip. The 3 nights at Refugio Frey include full board at the hut. No — airport transfers are not included but can be arranged as an optional add-on. Fly into Bariloche International Airport (BRC), with direct connections from Buenos Aires (EZE/AEP). Contact us in advance and we'll coordinate your transfer.

Yes — shared double rooms in Bariloche are standard, and private upgrades are available at an additional cost. The 3 nights at Refugio Frey are in shared dormitory-style bunks — the only option at the hut, and part of the backcountry experience. Request your upgrade at the time of booking.
